Campbelltown celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Fisher's Ghost Festival with the Annual Street Parade on Saturday (Nov. 5th). Just over a thousand spectators lined Queen Street to witness the hour and half parade amidst persistent drizzle that kept many undercover.
More than 100 floats from local community groups, business and government organisations featured in the parade this year, well up on last year parade.
West Tiger's star
John Skandalis
officially opened the parade that was lead by a giant birthday cake to make the occasion. 2MCR aired the event live across the region, with commentary by John Spora to those who were unable to attend the event.
The parade also marked the end of an era for Mick Owens, one of the commentators at the main commentary position near Mawson Park. His familiar voice has been announcing each of the floats in the parade for more than 40 years but has decided that 2006 would be his last call.
Owens though did not see a surprise float in this year's parade, a Golden Microphone was entered in to acknowledged his achievement and contribution to the event.
One of the largest floats impressed crowds forgoing a truck to move it and instead using the strength of around 50 people to move it down the street. Other highlights included a series of marching bands from various organisations in the region and the local theatre group presenting a mini-play in six parts throughout the parade.
The Parade is the fist major event of the annual event and continued into the night with a Carnival and Fireworks Spectacular at Barbury Oval.
